Resuming after the earthquake...

Hello Everyone,

This is Shikhar with The Udaya Group. Following a brief hiatus after the two devastating earthquake in Nepal, we are now back with our monthly newsletter providing you with curated news, reviews and analysis of business and investments in Nepal. To reiterate our mission – we go above and beyond what is covered in the media to deliver to you a thought-out, analyzed and thoroughly researched data and analysis that is rare in the frontier markets. Developing market investors (and investors/potential investors focused particularly in Nepal) find this extremely helpful as unbiased opinions, well-rounded analysis and critical data are keys to making business and investment decisions.

Over the last few months, and after the “silent period” following the earthquake, infrastructure has again come into limelight. While prior to the earthquake, it was centered around our southern neighbor, India, recently, it is has been centered around our northern neighbor, China.  Two companies have shown interests in developing railway networks connecting cities in Nepal as well as with cities in China. See the article off of eKantipur posted below for more detail.  Additionally, a Kathmandu-Birgunj railway project was also included in the recent budget, despite without deeper understanding of its feasibility.

With technical assistance from the Government of France, a feasibility study was done to understand the viability of cable car in Kathmandu. Not sure if cable car will act as a form of mass transit, but it can surely deliver as an alternative mode of transportation for tourists.

We also go beyond what media covered in relation to foreign investments in Tila-1 (440 MW) and Tila-2 (420 MW) and what is the actuality.

Lastly, we analyze IPO and potential IPO of Khani Khola Hydropower Company Limited and Dibyashwari Hydropower Limited to give you some insights on the capital market.

Thank you again for following us and for expressing your continued interests even while we were absent. Feel free to reach out to me directly in case you have any questions.

Shikhar
